Raman Sankar, PhD, MD, is Professor and Chief of Pediatric Neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He holds the Rubin Brown Distinguished Chair in Pediatric Neurology. Dr. Sankar obtained his PhD from the University of Washington in medicinal chemistry, where he was involved in teaching and research. Subsequently, he entered Tulane Medical School, where he obtained his medical degree. He completed his training in neurology and pediatric neurology at UCLA.

Dr Sankar has focused his laboratory research on mechanisms of seizure-induced injury and epileptogenicity in the developing brain, which is funded by the NINDS, NIH. He is also involved in research addressing the epileptogenic potential of head trauma in the developing brain. Current research includes investigations modeling the comorbidity of depression that accompanies epileptogenesis. Dr Sankar is one of the investigators in a NINDS–sponsored multicenter study on childhood absence epilepsy. He is a reviewer for research grants submitted to the National Institutes of Health, Epilepsy Foundation, CURE, American Epilepsy Society, and other organizations.
